Taking Open Standards Desktops for a Spin at LinuxWorld and NetworkWorld Canada 2006

1 January 1970

), April 24 - 26, 2006 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Sponsored by Xandros, Intel and MCR Computer Rentals, this demonstration area will be open to all attendees.

(OPENPRESS) March 28, 2006 -- Open standards go beyond mere specification. They allow governments, businesses, and individuals to enjoy an unprecedented freedom of choice in computing, as they are available for all to read and implement. Because they tend to encourage interoperability and fair competition, open standards offer emancipation from proprietary vendors who aim to have their standards dominate the market.

Open Standards Desktop Live will feature standards-certified desktop operation systems from Xandros, the leading developer of alternative operating environments, running on Intel-based machines. Exhibit Hall visitors will have the opportunity to test drive the best-of-breed open source applications on user-friendly desktops: office suites, web browsers, personal information managers, image editors, media players, games, and more.

"As Open Source continues to grow in the enterprise market, the next frontier is the desktop. This showcase will demonstrate Open Source standards-based client software applications available today," says Bruce Cole, Director of Strategic Development for Plum Communications Inc.

Both Xandros and Intel are part of the Linux Standard Base (LSB) Desktop Project, an initiative of the Free Standards Group. The LSB Desktop Project encourages the wide-spread adoption of the Linux desktop by working to standardize its core components.

"Open standards are critical for both hardware and software providers who have neither the time nor the resources to certify their wares for a myriad of operating systems," says Andy Typaldos, Xandros CEO. "Above all, open standards give enterprises and individuals the freedom to shop around for the computing solutions that address their needs, not those of a monopolistic vendor. We are honored to help deliver this message to LWNW 2006 attendees."
