Sonic Control Announces the MusicTech 22: The Twenty-two Tech Stocks Globally Impacting Music Production and Education

1 January 1970

Petersburg, VA (PRWEB) April 22, 2006 -- Sonic Control, a leading music industry web site, announces the Sonic Control MusicTech 22 Stock Watch covering twenty-two publicly traded companies that globally impact virtually all music production from CDs to movie soundtracks to classroom education. USA members of the Sonic Control MusicTech 22 are Activision, Adobe, Advanced Micro Design, Apple, Avid, Creative Technology, Electronic Arts, Game Stop, Guitar Center, Harman International, Intel, Kaman, Loud Technologies, Make Music, Microsoft, PriMedia, Sony, Sonic Solutions, THQ and Yamaha. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Rolandcorp and TEAC round out the Sonic Control MusicTech 22. «Covering the MusicTech 22 marks the first time publicly traded music and selected tech stocks have been identified for their story to be told in the general and financial press,» said Sonic Control CEO Peter Alexander.

Coverage of the Sonic Control MusicTech 22 includes a news section for individual company press releases and stories, posted news alerts during the week on the Sonic Control home page, weekly gains and losses after the Friday bell, and month-end wrap-up with weekly stock charts. «Sonic Control brings music technology's story to Man Street by giving both balanced financial reporting and a behind-the-scenes look at product development in the spirit of Tracey Kidder's ‘The Soul of a New Machine'» explained Sonic Control CEO Peter Alexander.

The Seven Categories of the MusicTech 22

The seven categories of Sonic Control's MusicTech 22 are CPUs & Operating Systems, Electronic Games, Music Production Software, Hardware/Integrated System Solutions, Distribution, Media, and selected Japanese companies trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

CPUs and Operating Systems

These members of the SC MusicTech 22 design the computer's central processing unit (CPU), motherboards, and the operating systems music technology applications run on. SC MusicTech 22 members include Advanced Micro Design for CPUs; Apple for the OS X operating system, Apple computers, and Apple Logic Software; Intel for CPUs, and Microsoft for its Windows operating system.

Electronic Games

Electronic game companies are included because of their impact for hiring staff composers, their use of freelance (work-for-hire) composers, the overall importance of game music (some of which is now being released on CD for retail sales), and game distribution. The four publicly trade companies making up this category are Activision, Electronic Arts, Game Stop and THQ.

Music Production Software

These SC MusicTech 22 companies create the software used in music production and education. Except for Yamaha, what these companies and Apple have in common is their ownership of both music production and video production software under one roof. Five companies make up this category. Though known for its graphics programs, Adobe makes the list because it purchased Cool Edit Pro and renamed it Audition 2. Avid owns DigiDesign (creators of ProTools recording software) and most recently purchased M-Audio. Make Music is the creator of Finale music notation software whose primary use is in education and music publishing. Sony makes the MusicTech 22 list because it purchased software programs Acid, Sound Forge and Vegas from Sonic Foundry. Yamaha, who makes everything musical, recently acquired Steinberg (creators of Cubase and Nuendo products) from Pinnacle Systems. After the Steinberg sale, Pinnacle Systems was acquired by Avid.

Hardware/Integrated Systems Solutions

Creative Technology is best known for making the SoundBlaster line of audio cards, but less well known is their ownership of E-MU Systems of Scott's Valley, California, a leading edge music technology company whose software records the sounds of musical instruments for playback on MIDI keyboards and other media. Harman International owns Lexicon, DOD and other brands. Loud Technologies owns Mackie, makers of high quality analog and digital mixing boards, EAW monitors and other lines. Sonic Solutions owns Roxio CD and DVD authoring software.

Distribution And Retail

Only two make the Sonic Control MusicTech 22 list: distribution giant Kaman who has deep roots in aerospace, and Guitar Center with 150 stores across the USA.

Media

Only PriMedia, publishers of Mix, ReMix, Electronic Musician and dozens of other print publications, makes the Sonic Control MusicTech 22 list.

In Japan

Rounding out the Sonic Control MusicTech 22 are Rolandcorp, known for its synthesizers and digital audio equipment, and TEAC, also with roots in music and aerospace. Both firms are traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
