Leading Pharmaceutical Company Deploys DefinedLogic’s Portal Platform

1 January 1970

DefinedLogic, LLC, a company with a long track record of developing and deploying mission-critical solutions for enterprise customers, announces the release of a comprehensive portal platform that leverages open-source technologies such as Lucene, Jakarta-commons and Tomcat. The portal platform includes a suite of document management, content management, analytic and collaboration tools. Previous versions of the portal platform have been implemented in a multitude of industries including one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Focusing on clients that are seeking a robust portal solution, while leveraging the cost effectiveness of Open-Source technologies, DefinedLogic has developed a platform that enables an organization to implement a variety of portal features for a fraction of the cost of an enterprise package. This proposition intrigued a leading pharmaceutical company and now seven portals later; the cost savings and implementation timelines have exceeded all expectations.

The Opportunity
The contracts organization within a leading pharmaceutical company was seeking a solution to organize and disseminate analytical information to their business partners. Because of the sensitivity of the information it was critical that each user accessing the information would be authenticated via the corporate single sign-on process, however flexibility was required once a user was authenticated to enable that user to have access to documents within other business portals. The organization was also looking to provide state-of-the-art analytical charts and graphs which could present a complex set of statistics in an easy to read graphical rendering. After evaluating several enterprise portal solutions, DefinedLogic was approached to assist in the evaluation and implementation phases.

The enterprise portal solution providers were narrowed to a finalist. However, it quickly became evident that the licensing fees associated to the enterprise package would exceed the existing budget and the implementation costs of the enterprise package had not yet been determined.

The End Result
"When we began working with our client, we never considered our platform. Our approach is to remain technologically agnostic until we understand the full set of business requirements. They were already evaluating packages and requested that we help evaluate the finalists based on our experience," Alex Shanley, analyst from DefinedLogic said. Once the license fees negotiations broke down, we were asked for an alternative. We presented our portal platform as a cost-effective alternative and demonstrated its capabilities. Our group security model met the required flexibility for user permissions and our document management, events, links, alerts and feedback portlets were able to support all of the business requirements with minimal customization.

The next goal was to define and design the analytical portlets required to support the graphing and charting requirements. After assessing several products and creating proof-of-concepts models we selected Advizor Solutions (www.advisorsolutions.com) and SmartMoney's Map Applet (www.smartmoney.com). By integrating these products in to the portal platform we were able to provide a robust analytical platform that married statistical analysis to documents and training materials. "We were looking at a relatively short turn around time between the initial product evaluations and the timeframe for launch, which was about 4 weeks, as well as a budget of $50,000 to get the solution up and running," stated Alex Shanley, Analyst, DefinedLogic. "The overall experience of using the analytical tools needed to be powerful and user-friendly while still offering a low cost. We were able to bring the project from concept through deployment, fulfilling these goals, by following our proven methodology in developing enterprise-level portal strategies and the technology to support them."

With the portal solution fully deployed, the contract’s group analysts were able develop and disseminate accurate and meaningful documents, reports, charts and graphs. The need to create numerous, lengthy e-mails to disseminate their work was eliminated. The portal alleviated the need to email the documents and analysis, while always providing the user with the most current versions and providing the user the capability to access the archived history of a document. It also provided a central location for all of the information created and collected by the organization and a powerful search tool to quickly access the most relevant information.

About DefinedLogic's Portal Platform
DefinedLogic's portal platform is a proven, cost effective technology alternative to out-of-the-box products that fall short of a solution that fits the exact needs of your business. The platform has been implemented for public sites that support hundreds of thousands of visits per day as well as intranet that support critical business functions. We have implemented the platform to support a businesses' corporate web site, as well as their intranet and extranet functions. Our intranet implementations have included sales force automation projects, human resource integrations as well as a hub for analytical reporting dissemination. It is simple and cost effective to implement and maintain.
