Intel/Microsoft: Management & Virtualisation Tech
1 January 1970 INTEL AND MICROSOFT OUTLINE PLANS FOR ADVANCING BENEFITS OFNEW MANAGEMENT AND VIRTUALISATION TECHNOLOGIES ConnectedTechnologies to Offer Businesses New Capabilities and CostSavings INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, San Francisco, March 7,2006 - Intel Corporation and Microsoft Corporation todayoutlined plans to connect computer network managementtechnologies and also to work together to advance promisingvirtualisation technology that will bring businesses newcapabilities and cost savings. In a move to bring uniquemanagement benefits to the broad number of users ofMicrosoft® Systems Management Server 2003 (SMS) for thefirst time, Intel plans to connect its new Intel® ActiveManagement Technology (Intel AMT) with Microsoft SMS,substantially enhancing customers ability to morethoroughly protect their computers from viruses and to helpsignificantly lower maintenance costs. Intel and Microsofthave also joined together to extend Intel® VirtualisationTechnology (Intel® VT) to include support for mapping I/Odevices to virtual machines on servers with a newspecification, published today, called Intel Virtualisationfor Directed I/O (Intel VT-d). Part of the Intel VT familyof technologies, Intel VT-d helps improve the reliability, flexibility and performance of I/O in a virtualisedenvironment. Microsoft has collaborated with Intel ondevelopment of the specification to help ensure it providesoptimal functionality for users. "Intel AMT and MicrosoftSMS will mean relief for those who manage computer networkswho have struggled to effectively control virus outbreaks, audit networked PCs or handle computer problems withoutaffecting users productivity," said Pat Gelsinger, Intelsenior vice president, general manager, Digital EnterpriseGroup. "In addition, the combination of hardwarevirtualisation in Intel VT-d working with Microsoftoperating systems, management tools and Windows® hypervisortechnology promises dramatic new capabilities andefficiencies." "Microsoft is pleased that customers usingSMS 2003, including our recently announced SMS 2003 R2, cantake advantage of the new capabilities delivered throughIntel AMT and Intel s Professional Business Platform via theIntel developed add-on software for SMS," said Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Server and Tools Business atMicrosoft. "This enables customers to better manage theirenvironments and computing infrastructures by reducing manychallenges they face today. Similarly, Microsoft isincreasing its investments in the Microsoft Systems Centerfamily of products to address resource optimisation andvirtual machine life-cycle management so customers canmanage their physical and virtualised environments from onetoolset." Availability of Unique Management CapabilitiesExpanded Intel has worked with Microsoft to make IntelAMT interoperable with the Microsoft SMS change andconfiguration management solution through Intel-developedadd-on software. Microsoft SMS 2003 helps simplify computernetwork management by providing the tools to ITadministrators for streamlining the deployment of softwareapplications and updates, managing digital assets andpatching security vulnerabilities. As a result, ITadministrators can spend more time on strategic projects andless on more routine tasks. Intel AMT enables networkmanagers for the first time to perform these and otherfunctions for all PCs on their networks equipped with IntelAMT, even if the computers are turned off, or have a failedhard drive or operating system. Until now, networkadministrators could only perform security updates andmaintenance procedures remotely if PCs were turned on, andthey often required users cooperation. In addition, theIntel AMT component of a PC cannot be accessed by the user, helping prevent users from crippling management software. As a result, network managers can account for theAMT-equipped PCs that are on the network and inventory theversions of software on them. Existing users of MicrosoftSMS 2003 will be among the first to employ the newcapabilities provided by the collaboration, allowing them toupdate their systems to work in conjunction with Intel supcoming Professional Business Platform, code-named Averill, which will be in PCs later this year. Intel s ProfessionalBusiness Platform combines Intel s latest microprocessor, chipset, communications and software technologies to meetthe needs of mainstream businesses. Improved Reliability,Flexibility, Performance for Virtual Computing Inteltoday published the specification for Intel VT-d, whichcomplements work being done in the PCI SIG I/OVirtualisation Work Group. VT-d significantly improvesperformance and robustness of data movement in virtualisedenvironments. "Microsoft is collaborating with Intel onthe design and specification of VT-d," said Muglia. "VT-dprovides another critical hardware foundation for theWindows virtualisation architecture. The VT-d hardwarefoundation combined with future versions of the Windowshypervisor will help provide customers with increasedscalability and higher-performance I/O by enabling directassignment of devices to virtual machines." Virtualisationenables a single computer to function as multiple computers, each with its own operating system in a separateenvironment. Intel VT builds support for virtualisation intothe chip, helping accelerate industry innovation, andenhancing manageability, ease of use and security on serverand client platforms. Intel VT will be supported on theWindows platform with Virtual Server 2005 R2 service pack 1,which is scheduled for beta release within 90 days. With theservice pack, Microsoft customers will be provided withbetter interoperability, strengthened isolation to helpprevent corruption of one virtual machine from affectingothers on the same system, and improved performance fornon-Windows guest operating systems. This service pack alsoprovides existing Microsoft Virtual Server customers with animportant transition to the Windows hypervisor, which willbe delivered in the wave of the next version of WindowsServer®, code-named 'Longhorn.
