Friendster Named 'Application of the Year' at MySQL Users Conference
1 January 1970 Friendster, the easiest way to keep in better touch with your friends, today announced that it was one of three companies awarded 'Application of the Year' by MySQL AB, developer of the popular open source database. The award, which was presented at the MySQL Users Conference, is designed to recognize the best corporate and community database applications using MySQL.
"Friendster has been very successful implementing MySQL in a massively scaled-out enterprise environment," said Zack Urlocker, vice president of marketing for MySQL AB. "This award is a testament to the innovative ability of its IT group to provide a true competitive advantage using our database."
The "Application of the Year" is awarded to the best public applications that showcase MySQL's innovative features and provide tangible benefits to their organization and its users. In particular, Friendster's global solution was evaluated on how well it enabled the company to cut costs, capitalize on new business opportunities and solve business problems.
"MySQL has been an integral part of Friendster's evolution since the company was founded in 2002," said Chris Lunt, senior director of engineering at Friendster. "In building our global community, it was important that money be spent wisely, and that we choose the right partners who could support us at every phase of growth. Early on, as the company grew to one million members within a matter of months, MySQL provided a fast, reliable and affordable solution that scaled rapidly. Today it enables us to continually add the latest features and functionality necessary for our members to keep in touch with their network of friends."
Today, Friendster's online community consists of more than 16 million members worldwide. Members have a variety of tools with which to communicate, including blogs, instant messaging, chat, discussion boards and more.
