ETSZONE Hosts First Annual Tech Party and Exhibition to Showcase Accomplishments of Student Interns
1 January 1970ETSZONE hosted its first annual Tech Party and Exhibition on Thursday, August 18, 2005, to showcase Houston-area students who participated in the ETSZONE SummerLab program and demonstrate research projects they completed during the internship. The program included a special guest address by Dr. Sri Sridharan, a former Stanford University professor and former Chief Architect for Knowledge Management at Intel, who talked to the interns and guests about the importance of goal setting and mentoring relationships.
The 2005 SummerLab theme was Open Source Technology and Collaboration. With research projects spanning information, communications and security technologies, interns spent an entire summer developing and improving solutions for the ETSZONE technology roadmap and open source community.
John Stautner, founder of ETSZONE, says students got hands-on experience with emerging technologies and business that will help them in the future. "These students get to see real-life issues and opportunities for businesses," said Stautner. "The work they're doing makes a real difference in the world of business and technology, and SummerLab helps us advance our technology services for ETSZONE customers."
Projects demonstrated include: document processing and online storage; open source business applications for customer relationship management and customer support ticketing; Voice over Internet Protocol applications for business; network and data security; and Wiki collaboration for business acceleration.
The event also showcased JUNIORZONE, a residential technology services business staffed primarily by students. JUNIORZONE provides an advanced learning and earning environment while also serving as a strategic technology and market research lab for ETSZONE. Many of the students who participated in SummerLab 2005 were already involved in the JUNIORZONE business.
Two high school seniors from the Academy of Science and Technology at Oak Ridge High School, Diego Ongaro, 17, and Mikey Martin, 17, were each awarded $1000 scholarships from ETSZONE for their outstanding achievements during SummerLab.
"I was totally surprised," said Martin. "It's such a great program. And it's the work that I want to do in life."
Stautner believes that the ETSZONE SummerLab is a great program for students who want to focus their summer vacations on something meaningful. "Many students want to make an effort to get something significant done during the summer," said Stautner. Stautner hopes that as more people hear about SummerLab and JUNIORZONE, they will gain broader participation in other parts of the country.
Sridharan, who is also a JUNIORZONE customer in Phoenix, put it all into perspective that evening when he told students to keep dreaming big. "Do not limit yourself," he said. "Think big. Then think even bigger. You can achieve things you never thought you could."
