EPOS Shipments to Europe/Middle East/Africa Continue Solid Growth in Midst of Struggling Economies According to IHL Consulting Group
1 January 1970 Franklin, Tenn. (PRWEB) April 4, 2006 -- The electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) market in Europe/Middle East/Africa experienced solid 4 percent shipment increases in 2005 even though several European economies continue to struggle under heavy taxation and an aging population. The new store growth of segments such as Supermarkets and Hypermarkets are helping to drive shipment growth says a new study released today by IHL Consulting Group. «Although several regional economies continue to struggle, POS shipments continue to pull out of an early decade slump as retailers upgrade their infrastructures,» said Greg Buzek, president of IHL Consulting Group, a research and advisory firm that serves retailers and retail technology vendors. «Supermarkets and Hypermarkets are leading the way with new innovative systems tied to loyalty programs and Self-Checkout.» According to the study, retailers in all vertical segments are looking more to purchasing their POS hardware and software from different vendors. With few exceptions, the dual vendor strategy is being pushed by lower cost hardware options that run on Microsoft Windows operating systems and Linux. These are just some of the findings from IHL's new market study, «2006 Europe/Middle East/Africa POS Terminal Market Study,» which is available immediately. Additional findings include: • Hypermarket/Supercenters were the the strongest market segment, adding over 200,000 new terminals in 2005. • In 2005, Intel Celeron/AMD Sempron processors were the most popular choices for new POS units purchased. • Microsoft Windows operating systems continue to gain market share with a combined 76 percent of the market in 2005. • Shipments of Linux-based terminals grew at 21.4% year to year.. IHL's «2006 Europe/Middle East/Africa POS Terminal Study» reviews the shipments and installed base of POS terminals sold into retailers in the region. It includes market shipment and installed base figures, market value, situation analysis for 8 retail market segments in 9 regions of EMEA, overall trends affecting the POS market, and forecasts through 2010.
