Avamar Poised to Transform Data Protection Industry With Latest Release

1 January 1970

Avamar Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of innovative data protection solutions, today announced the general availability of the most recent version of Avamar's flagship product Axion. Axion v3.5 includes a wide range of industry leading capabilities including centralized management, expanded client functionality, internationalization and file system support enabling searchable backup and interoperability with tape archive solutions.

Axion v3.5, the most advanced backup and recovery solution on the market today, efficiently moves and stores data on a scalable, high-availability server, using all-disk storage. Avamar' can cost-effectively maintain large, multiyear archives, all of which are available for recovery on demand. By providing secure, flexible access to its centralized data store, Avamar delivers solutions for Backup & Recovery, Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery, Data Security & Encryption, Remote Office Data Protection, and Legal Discovery & Support for Regulatory Compliance.

"Avamar is known for having efficient data collection and storage allowing our customers to keep all off their data available on disk. In fact, the company holds several patents around this technology. Avamar's latest release expands our solid data protection platform and allows our customers to leverage their investment in backup & recovery", said Ed Walsh CEO of Avamar. "Avamar's new file system interface seamlessly integrates with customer's tape based backup environment delivering the best of both worlds; disk and tape. In addition, Avamar's file system interface provides secure access for most popular enterprise search appliances to index our customers consolidated information stores."

Today's corporate data centers demand highly scalable, fault tolerant storage based on open architecture to meet their growing requirements. Avamar's new Axion v3.5 enterprise data protection software provides customers unparalleled reliability, availability and scalability. This allows businesses to create high-integrity backups, and high performance, on-demand data for restores. Ultimately, allowing corporations to meet their Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).

"Avamar version 3.5 data protection platform will dramatically change the way companies view enterprise backup," explained Tony Asaro, ESG Storage Analyst. "The new Avamar file system interface combined with its efficient collection and storage capabilities go way beyond traditional backup. Avamar reduces data -- at the source -- and creates a consolidated information store. This innovative approach provides limitless possibilities to leverage backup for key corporate requirements such as legal discovery support and legacy tape integration."

As data storage grows in the data center and in remote offices, bottlenecks to data protection continue to tighten, trapping data behind disk spindles, computer systems, and local or wide area networks. Avamar's Axion addresses the root cause of this challenge, by eliminating the need to move and store redundant data at the source.

"Avamar version 3.5 provides enterprise class backup and business continuance functionality. The new Enterprise Manager console allows me to see all my servers in one place. The capability to drill down and view the status of each backup job is awesome," said Jason Paige, Information Systems Manager at Integral Capital Partners. "Avamar's new file system interface will help us with legal discovery requests. With Avamar, we can search our entire enterprise securely and in one place. What took days in the past now take us seconds. The interoperability feature of version 3.5 goes beyond traditional backup and allows us to leverage our backups for substantially increased business value."

Avamar's latest release includes a number of enhancements to support OEM's and Managed Service Providers. These features include centralized management enhancements, internationalization and a branded user interface.

"Bravo Avamar! Axion version 3.5 will help us reduce our operational costs associated with servicing our customers. This latest release from Avamar is completely inline with our business strategy, and the inventive file system interface with searchable backup, provides us with an opportunity to add additional capabilities for legal discovery," stated Frank Brick, CEO, Arsenal Digital Solutions.

Key Features:

Industry Leading Manageability

New Avamar capabilities facilitate the management of distributed deployments within a single interface to monitor and manage multiple Axion systems. Avamar's v3.5 delivers a dashboard view to allow a backup administrator to quickly assess status of the distributed Avamar deployment, and the ability to quickly drill down into a particular Avamar system to view more granular status or manage particular aspects of that Avamar system.

File System Support

With the availability of the Avamar file system, customers now have the ability to access all backups stored within Avamar to be via a file system view down to the granularity of an individual file. With this new capability, Avamar can be utilized as an online, long-term historical strategic enterprise information store as opposed to simply being a backup and restore repository. The Avamar file system facilitates the following areas of functionality for this release: Tape output, direct restore, and enterprise search.

Extensive Client Coverage and Functionality

In this latest release, Avamar continues to expand client coverage. Avamar's v3.5 adds support for the following environments: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (both 32-bit and 64-bit), Oracle on AIX, Oracle on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Solaris 10, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, DB2 support on AIX, AIX 5.3.

In addition, Avamar's v3.5 expands client capabilities to include:

* NetApp filer data protection -- Ability to protect multiple NetApp

filers with a single NDMP accelerator. Ability to perform a backup at

the same time as a restore on an NDMP accelerator.

* SQL Server -- Ability to backup multiple SQL Server instances on a

single server. Ability to backup multiple databases within a single

backup job. Ability to backup a whole SQL Server instance, without

specifying individual databases.

* Exchange -- Ability to backup at the granularity of a storage group, yet

be able to restore an individual Exchange database. Improved

performance for message-level backups. This release delivers a 5-fold

improvement in backup performance for Exchange message-level backups.

Internationalization Support

With Avamar's growing presence with global organizations, Avamar has included enhanced internationalization support with the Avamar's v3.5 solution. Avamar now has the ability to backup and restore files/directories that have names using wide characters (e.g. Japanese, Chinese, etc). Supported languages include Japanese, French, German, and Spanish.
