Artesyn and Wind River Partner to Offer Carrier Grade Linux for Artesyn's AdvancedTCA Telecom Blades

1 January 1970

Artesyn Communication Products, a subsidiary of Artesyn Technologies, and Wind River Systems, Inc., the global leader in Device Software Optimization ( DSO ), today announced that they have joined forces to offer Wind River Platform for Network Equipment on Artesyn's AdvancedTCA telecom blades. Artesyn also announced that it has joined Wind River's Alliance Program as a platform partner.

Artesyn and Wind River will work together to develop Carrier Grade Linux and VxWorks( TM ) board support packages ( BSP ) for Artesyn's telecom blades, beginning with the PowerPC® processor-based KatanaQp AdvancedTCA blade. Wind River will provide validation services for the new BSPs. Both companies will work together to market the new products.

Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, available with the latest mainstream releases of OSDL Carrier Grade Linux ( version 2.0.1 ) and the Linux 2.6.10 kernel, combines Wind River's Eclipse-based Workbench development suite with a rich set of networking middleware. The platform makes it easy for telecom device developers to develop and deploy a complete range of network equipment applications, from core and enterprise to access and edge devices.

"Wind River is a pre-eminent supplier of real-time operating systems and has taken the lead in offering an integrated development and run-time environment for carrier grade Linux," said Todd Wynia, vice president of marketing at Artesyn. "Our high-availability AdvancedTCA blades, together with Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, provide an ideal foundation for building a broad range of high-availability telecom infrastructure systems."

"Artesyn has always been at the forefront of providing open architecture solutions for high-availability telecom infrastructure applications," added John Fanelli, vice president of product planning and management at Wind River. "We're pleased to have Artesyn on board as a platform partner and look forward to working with them to provide our joint customers with fully integrated, standards-based DSO solutions that are cost effective and easily support a wide range of development environments."

The KatanaQp is a high-performance AdvancedTCA® telecom blade that combines two Freescale MPC7447A processors containing PowerPC® cores with four PTMC expansion sites, redundant IPMI-based system management interfaces, and a PICMG 3.1-compliant AdvancedTCA interface equipped with 10 Gigabit Ehernet channels. The KatanaQp's high-speed Freescale processors, switched fabric AdvancedTCA interface, flexible mezzanine expansion, and integrated system management make it easy to customize for a wide variety of control and packet processing applications, including WAN access, SS7/SIGTRAN signaling, media gateways, traffic processing, wireless base stations and softswitches.

"Freescale's family of high-performance PowerPC processors has a deep history in providing exceptional communications processing performance to a wide range of companies in the networking industry," said Bill Dunnigan, vice president and general manager of Freescale's Computing Platform Division. "By leveraging Artesyn's AdvancedTCA blades and Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, our joint customers can now develop state-of-the-art, high-performance network equipment solutions with exceptional speed and at low overall cost."
